The Opportunity: Be a Strategic Partner for Social Impact
We are seeking a dedicated and personable Part-Time Nonprofit Controller (15 to 20 hours per week) to join our growing team. In this role, you will be more than an accountant; you will serve as a trusted strategic partner for a portfolio of nonprofit clients. You will guide them toward greater financial health, transform their financial operations, and empower their leadership to make data-driven decisions that advance their mission.
This is a dynamic opportunity for a hands-on leader who is comfortable managing multiple clients and thrives in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
What You'll Do
Your responsibilities are focused on providing comprehensive financial oversight and strategic guidance to our clients:
- Serve as a fractional Controller for multiple nonprofit organizations, building strong, collaborative relationships with their staff and leadership.
- Deliver timely and accurate financial reports for management and Board of Directors, translating complex data into actionable insights.
- Manage all aspects of the accounting cycle, including month-end close, reconciliations, accounts payable/receivable, and payroll processing.
- Recommend and implement best practices for internal controls, accounting policies, and operational procedures.
- Oversee grant management, including tracking, reporting, and compliance.
- Support clients throughout annual audits and Form 990 filings.
- Train and mentor client staff on financial best practices.
What You Bring
- A deep passion for serving and supporting nonprofit organizations.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, with the ability to manage the full accounting cycle.
- Proven experience managing multiple clients or projects simultaneously.
- High proficiency in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting or public accounting is a significant plus.
- CPA certification is a plus.

Starting hourly rate for this part-time position is $50 to $60 per hour.
This position is open to candidates located anywhere in the United States. For those based outside of San Diego, the role will be fully remote. If you reside in San Diego, the position will follow a hybrid schedule.
