Description
Contract Patent Paralegal — High-Volume Patent Prosecution
Type: Contract (3–4 months, potential for extension or conversion)
Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience
About the Role
We are managing a high-volume patent pipeline (~200 applications) across multiple advanced technology domains and are seeking experienced contract Patent Paralegals to support prosecution at scale.
This is not a typical low-volume IP role. You will work directly with the inventor and patent counsel to ensure accuracy, consistency, and flawless USPTO filing execution across a complex and fast-moving portfolio spanning biotech, AI/software, medical devices, and consumer health innovations.
What You’ll Do
- Review dependent and independent claims for:
- Consistency
- Proper antecedent basis
- Logical coverage
- Cross-reference:
- Claims ↔ specifications
- Figures ↔ descriptions and claim elements
- Perform final QC on attorney redlines to ensure:
- Numbering integrity
- Cross-reference accuracy
- Dependency structure remains intact
- Manage USPTO filing logistics, including:
- Entity status
- Fee calculations
- IDS preparation
- Oath/declaration and assignment documents
- File applications via USPTO Patent Center / EFS-Web
- Track critical deadlines:
- Office action responses
- Priority dates
- Provisional conversions
- Maintain pipeline visibility and flag bottlenecks
- Coordinate across inventor, outside counsel, and USPTO
Requirements
What You Bring
- 3–7 years of patent prosecution paralegal experience (utility patents required)
- Direct experience with USPTO Patent Center / EFS-Web filings (non-negotiable)
- Ability to manage 15–25 active filings simultaneously
- Experience across multiple technical domains (e.g., biotech, AI/software, medical devices, chemical/materials)
- Exceptional attention to detail — especially in cross-referencing claims and specifications
- Strong sense of urgency and responsiveness in a high-throughput environment
- Preferred:
- ABA-approved paralegal certificate or equivalent
- NALA CP or NFPA RP certification
What You Don’t Need
- A science degree
- Experience drafting claims or conducting prior art searches
- Big Law background (boutique or in-house experience is often more relevant for this role)
Why This Role
- Immediate impact on a large, active IP portfolio
- Exposure to cutting-edge technologies across multiple domains
- Fast-paced, execution-focused environment where quality and speed both matter
- Opportunity for contract-to-permanent conversion based on performance
