Position Summary:
The Senior Director of Finance oversees daily accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with applicable regulations and donor requirements. This role leads finance staff, manages the monthly close, prepares financial statements and analyses, and coordinates the audit, 990, and related filings. As a key partner to the CFO, the Senior Director ensures operational excellence, transparency, and accountability across the finance team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
To excel in this role, the ideal candidate must demonstrate proficiency in fulfilling each essential duty and responsibility. These include the following:
Accounting Operations
- Lead finance team operations, including team meetings, trainings, and cross-department coordination.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture aligned with organizational values.
- Supervise the Staff Accountant and Finance Assistant.
- Maintain and update accounting policies, internal controls, and financial process documentation for CFO approval.
- Oversee accounts payable, gift, and grant payment procedures.
- Ensure compliance with reimbursement and credit card policies.
- Manage departmental calendars for financial close, audit, 990, and budget deadlines.
- Maintain the organizational processing calendar and departmental communications.
Financial Reporting
- Lead the monthly close process, including journal entries, accruals, allocations, reconciliations, and interfund reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and variance analyses for leadership and committee review.
- Maintain and distribute financial dashboards to support organizational decision-making.
- Oversee payroll allocations, benefit accounting, and payroll journal entries.
- Maintain and improve reporting tools, templates, and processes for efficiency and clarity.
- Partner with department leaders to review budget-to-actual performance.
Compliance & Controls
- Review grants payable, A/P, and vendor/grant payments (including ACHs, wires, and transfers).
- Handle check voids and system balance overrides.
- Serve as primary contact for compliance questions related to fund accounting, restrictions, spending policies, IRS rules, and donor agreements.
- Monitor W-9/ACH security and review system permissions quarterly.
- Coordinate state charity registrations, Texas Franchise filings, 1099 filings, and new vendor IRS checks.
- Manage contract repository and maintain audit-ready documentation, including signing authority matrix.
Audit, Tax, & Regulatory
- Coordinate and manage the annual financial statement audit, including PBC list, schedules, footnotes, and disclosures.
- Prepare 990 trial balance and schedules; review filings with preparers, including supporting organizations.
- Assist with Audit & Risk Management Committee coordination, communication and presentation preparation.
- Support annual reviews of supporting organizations’ financial statements.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Direct supervision of Staff Accountant and Finance Assistant
Requirements
Qualifications:

- Strong technical accounting expertise, with nonprofit and fund accounting experience required.
- Highly organized, with ability to manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective internal controls and compliance frameworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, and strong collaboration skills across departments.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required; CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including nonprofit accounting required.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- Experience with inter-fund accounting for subsidiary entities required.
- Experience with Foundant CommunitySuite and Microsoft Excel preferred.
