Senior Director of Finance & Operations
DEPLOY/US is a nonprofit convener, funder, and accelerator of climate and energy leadership across the political spectrum. A national organization, DEPLOY/US, seeks to hire an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Director of Finance & Operations.
DEPLOY/US’ goal is ambitious, durable decarbonization policy. With a bipartisan team and board, we are the only organization in the country focused on building the capacities, amplifying the voices, and scaling the impact of the entire ecosystem of civic enterprises and leaders working right-of-center on climate and energy as a crucial foundation for bipartisan policy.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Director of Finance & Operations (SDFO) is DEPLOY/US’ senior finance leader, responsible for ensuring the organization's financial health, integrity, and sustainability while partnering with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to strengthen the systems, processes, and infrastructure that support the organization's operations. Reporting to the COO, the SDFO provides strategic leadership for accounting, financial planning, reporting, budgeting, grants management, cash management, compliance, and organizational risk management.
The SDFO serves as a trusted advisor to the COO and organizational leadership, providing timely financial analysis and strategic guidance to support informed decision-making. This leader is committed to continuous improvement and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented finance function that promotes transparency, accountability, and organizational effectiveness in support of DEPLOY/US' mission.
The SDFO also oversees the financial operations of affiliated entities, as applicable, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and applicable federal and state regulations. The ideal candidate is an experienced financial leader with strong nonprofit expertise, exceptional analytical and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights that support strategic decision-making.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise, coach, and develop the Senior Accountant, providing ongoing performance management, mentorship, and professional development.
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture within the Finance & Operations function that delivers high-quality support across the organization.
- Support the continued growth and effectiveness of the Finance & Operations function by identifying opportunities to strengthen team processes, workflows, and systems.
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as a trusted advisor to the COO and organizational leadership by providing financial analysis, strategic insight, and recommendations that support organizational planning and decision-making.
- Partner with executive leadership to develop financial strategies and align financial resources in support of organizational priorities and long-term sustainability.
- Lead short- and long-term financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and analysis.
- Provide timely financial analysis and forecasting to inform resource allocation, organizational decision-making, and strategic priorities.
- Develop financial models and scenario analyses to evaluate strategic opportunities, organizational risks, and long-term financial sustainability.
- Monitor organizational financial performance and recommend opportunities to strengthen financial stewardship and operational efficiency.
- Lead the preparation and presentation of accurate, timely financial reports for executive leadership, the Board, and external stakeholders, as appropriate.
- Represent DEPLOY/US externally on financial and operational matters by building strong relationships with financial institutions, auditors, investment advisors, legal counsel, and other external partners.
- Oversee financial management of grants, contracts, and restricted funds.
- Ensure compliance with donor restrictions, grant agreements, and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with the Development and Programs teams on grant budgeting, proposal development, financial reporting, and the review of grant agreements for financial, legal, and compliance considerations.
- Provide financial guidance and operational guidance to partner organizations, as appropriate, helping strengthen financial management practices and organizational capacity across the field.
- Maintain a strong system of internal controls that safeguards organizational assets.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and nonprofit accounting standards and other applicable regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate annual financial statement audit, preparation of IRS Form 990, and other tax and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Oversee cash management, investments, and liquidity planning.
- Monitor organizational reserves and recommend strategies to support long-term financial sustainability and alignment with financial policies.
- Manage relationships with the organization's banking, audit, tax, investment, and other financial service providers.
Operations
- Partner with the COO to strengthen the organization's operational systems, processes, and infrastructure while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and cross-functional collaboration in support of organizational effectiveness.
- Develop and maintain organizational policies and procedures.
- Support the organization's technology infrastructure, business systems, cybersecurity, and technology-related vendor relationships.
- Oversee payroll, benefits administration, and related federal and state compliance requirements.
- Oversee organizational compliance, legal affairs, insurance, and risk management by partnering with external legal counsel, supporting governance activities, monitoring regulatory requirements, and implementing controls that safeguard the organization.
- Manage relationships with vendors supporting payroll and benefits, insurance, legal, technology, and other operational functions.
- Support HR operations, including onboarding, offboarding, and related HR processes, while partnering with the COO on recruitment and other HR activities, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, including experience leading finance functions and supervising staff.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop individuals and teams while fostering a collaborative, service-oriented culture.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain internal controls, oversee audits, manage cash flow, and present financial information and recommendations to executive leadership, board committees, and boards of directors.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and sound independent judgment on matters of organizational significance.
Ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy, manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing organizational needs, and achieve results in a dynamic environment. - Demonstrated systems thinker with the ability to strengthen organizational capacity by improving systems, processes, and infrastructure while enhancing cross-functional collaboration, and organizational effectiveness.

Preferred Qualifications
- CPA and/or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field.
- Experience managing the financial operations of organizations with affiliated entities, including 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), political action committees (PACs), or other related organizations.
- Experience supporting finance and operations for civil society organizations, advocacy efforts, or public policy initiatives; working within or alongside conservative or center-right networks, coalitions, or institutions; and/or within the energy, climate, or environmental policy arena.
- Knowledge of federal and state campaign finance laws, including the accounting, reporting, and compliance requirements for hard- and soft-money activities.
- Experience maintaining appropriate financial segregation among affiliated entities and ensuring compliance with applicable IRS and Federal Election Commission (FEC) regulations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- DEPLOY/US employees are required to work in the continental United States.
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States on the date of hire.

- Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check prior to hire.
- Ability to travel to attend required in-person retreats (typically 1-2 per year) and for other meetings, as needed.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time, salaried, remote position with a base compensation range of $150,000 - $180,000, commensurate with experience. DEPLOY/US offers a competitive total compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401(k) match, and generous vacation allowance.
